Part 1: The Childhood Fear
William O. Douglas was afraid of water. This fear started when he was a child. He was at a beach with his father. A big wave came. It knocked him down. He felt the water pull him. He could not breathe. From that day, he was very afraid of water.
Part 2: The Swimming Pool Incident
Douglas was eleven years old. He went to a swimming pool. He wanted to learn swimming. A big boy came to him. The boy pushed Douglas into the deep water. Douglas went down. He tried to come up. But he could not. He tried again and again. Finally, someone saved him. After this, his fear became very strong.
Part 3: Overcoming the Fear
Douglas decided to fight his fear. He hired a swimming teacher. The teacher helped him slowly. First, Douglas learned to put his face in water. Then he learned to kick his legs. Slowly, he learned to swim. It took many months. But finally, Douglas was not afraid anymore.
Main Message: We must face our fears to overcome them. If we run away from our fears, they will stay with us forever.
